Important Information

Certain types of items, substances, and goods may be considered dangerous for air transport based on their properties or based on customs and security regulations at the airport of departure or arrival.

The transport of such items may be restricted or prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage.

If you wish to transport dangerous goods on a commercial basis or dangerous goods not approved for passengers, please contact our cargo department.

Approval

Certain types of items, substances or goods are permitted. as baggage only on approval. In that case contact Smartwings Call Centre in advance to pre-arrange approval for such items. This authorization must be presented upon request at any time throughout the entire duration of transport.

All Lithium Batteries must comply with the requirements of each of the tests in the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, Section 38.3;

Lithium Power Banks

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

Maximum of any 2 powerbanks allowed per person.
Must be individually protected to prevent short circuit (by means of placing into original retail packaging, taping over exposed terminals or placing each item to separate plastic bag).

Portable Electronic Devices and Drones

The term "portable electronic device" (PED) means a small removable or non-removable battery powered equipment or device. Such are those that have the capability to store, record, and/or transmit text, images/video, or audio data. Most of the consumer commodities can be listed as PED such as mobiles, laptops, cameras, radios, audio devices, watches. Other examples are small vehicles, smart baggage, or e-cigarettes. Total maximum of 15 PED are allowed per passenger.

This general rule applies for other PED in this category.

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

Maximum of 15 Portable Electronic Devices are allowed per passenger.
Each installed battery must not exceed:
- For lithium metal batteries a lithium content of not more of 2g.
- For lithium ion batteries a Watt hour rating not exceeding more than 100 Wh.
Measures must be taken to avoid unintentional activation.
In PED capable of generating extreme heat, batteries, heating elements or other components must be isolated by removing them from the PED.
If carried in checked (hold) baggage PED must be completely switched off (not in sleep or hibernation), unless the device contains only lithium batteries not exceeding:
- 0,3g of lithium for lithium metal
- 2,7 Wh rating for lithium-ion batteries per device only.

This general rule applies for all other PED in this category.

Carry as hand baggage: ON APPROVAL.
Carry as hold baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Additional requirements:

Maximum of 15 Portable Electronic Devices are allowed per passenger.
If carried in checked, hold baggage PED must be completely switched off (not in sleep or hibernation), and measures must be taken to avoid damage and unintentional activation
Lithium Metal Batteries with lithium content exceeding 2g but not exceeding 8g, which meets UN Manual of Tests and Criteria can be used only by passengers, where such device is used for medical aid, like PMED, AED, POC or CPAP.

Baggage containing lithium batteries with lithium

Carry as hand baggage:
- Non removable batteries must not exceed 2.7 Wh or 0.3 g of lithium metal. Weight and size limits must also be complied with.
- Removable batteries: The requirements for spare batteries must be complied with.

Carry as hold baggage:
- Non removable batteries must not exceed 2.7 Wh or 0.3 g of lithium metal.
- Removable batteries: permitted., provided that batteries are removed and transported in the cabin individually protected. The requirements for spare batteries must also be complied with.

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

Only lighters with a safety cap or means of protection against unintentional activation is permitted.
Operating or charging these devices or batteries on the aircraft is strictly prohibited.

Portable electronic devices with non-lithium non-spillable batteries (up to 12 V and 100 Wh).

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

You can carry a maximum of two spare batteries;
Batteries must not exceed 12 V and 100 Wh.

Small vehicles equipped with a removable or non-removable lithium battery, used for personal transportation, including rideable suitcases (e.g. hoverboards, mini-Segways, Segway, airwheels, solowheel, e-bikes):

Carry as hand baggage: NOT PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED.

Wheelchairs

Battery-operated wheelchairs or other similar mobility aids powered by flooded batteries.

Carry as hand baggage: NOT PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Additional requirements:

Wheelchairs and mobility assistance devices must be loaded, stored, secured, and unloaded in an upright position;
Protect the battery terminals to avoid short circuits. Regarding flooded batteries, always carry them in a suitable packaging;
If a battery is securely attached to the wheelchair or a mobility assistance device, it can remain in place, but ensure the terminals are thoroughly protected.

Battery-operated wheelchairs or other similar mobility aids with non-spillable batteries.

Carry as hand baggage: NOT PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Additional requirements:

Wheelchairs or mobility assistance devices must be loaded, stored, secured, and unloaded in an upright position;
Battery terminals must be protected against short circuits;
In compliance with current regulations, you can transport one additional wet, non-spillable spare battery, two additional dry batteries, or nickel-metal hydride spare batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries for wheelchairs and other mobility aids.

Carry as hand baggage: ON APPROVAL.
Carry as hold baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Additional requirements:

Batteries must comply with the requirements of each of the tests in the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, Section 38.3;
Protect the battery terminals to avoid short circuits;
The battery must be securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid and disconnected from the electrical circuits according to the manufacturer's instructions – for example, disconnect the battery or turn off the main switch;
Remove the battery according to the manufacturer's instructions if the mobility aid does not provide adequate protection*.
If the battery can be removed and the device does not provide adequate protection* for it, it must be removed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. The battery to be removed must not exceed 300 Wh;
If the device does not provide adequate* protection for battery, and the battery exceeds 300 Wh, such device is prohibited
You may carry a maximum of one spare battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spare batteries not exceeding 160 Wh each;
Protect all removed or spare batteries against possible damage. You can carry them as hand baggage in the cabin;

* By adequate protection, following steps are necessary as minimum: battery terminals must be insulated, covered, or enclosed to prevent them from coming into contact with metal objects, conductive surfaces, or other batteries.

Other Hazardous Items

Carry as hand baggage: NOT PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Additional requirements:

Transporting camping stoves and fuel canisters containing previously flammable liquid is permitted, provided that the fuel tank of the appliance is empty and, consequently, complying with all the measures to eliminate any danger.

Non-flammable, non toxic aerosols or non-flammable aerosols, with no associated risks, for sports activities or personal use.

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

The total net quantity of non-radioactive, non-flammable medicinal or hygiene articles and non-toxic aerosols must not exceed 2 kg or 2 l, and the net amount of each article must not exceed 0.5 kg or 0.5 l. These quantities are permitted. in the cabin if purchased after the Security Control at the airport;
The discharge valves on aerosols must include a protection cap or another suitable system to prevent the accidental release of contents.

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED without the gas cartridge only.
Carrying as hold baggage: only PERMITTED without the gas cartridge.

Carry as hand baggage: ON APPROVAL.
Carry as hold baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Additional requirements:

It is permitted. to carry one rescue backpack per person containing compressed gas cartridges or a pyrotechnic trigger mechanism with a maximum of 200 mg of activation material;
Pack the backpack with caution to prevent accidental activation;
Airbags inside backpacks must include pressure relief valves.

Carry as hand baggage: ON APPROVAL.
Carry as hold baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Small cartridges fitted into a self-inflating personal safety device, intended to be worn by a person, such as a life-jacket or vest.

Additional requirements:

no more than two personal safety devices per person;
the personal safety device(s) must be packed in such a manner that they cannot be accidently activated;
limited to carbon dioxide or other suitable gas in Division 2.2 without a subsidiary hazard;
cartridge(s) must be for inflation purposes;
each device must be fitted with no more than two small cartridges; and
not more than two spare cartridges per device.

Other devices (e.g. motorcycle/bike self-inflating devices..)

Additional requirements:

no more than two personal safety devices per person;
the personal safety device(s) must be packed in such a manner that they cannot be accidently activated;
limited to carbon dioxide or other suitable gas in Division 2.2 without a subsidiary hazard;
cartridge(s) must be for inflation purposes;
each device must be fitted with no more than two small cartridges; and
not more than two spare cartridges per device
the water capacity of each cartridge must not exceed 50 ml.

Note: For carbon dioxide a gas cartridge with a water capacity of 50 ml is equivalent to a 28 g cartridge

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

You are allowed only one hydrocarbon gas-powered hair curler per passenger.
You cannot use the device on board and protect it adequately for the trip;
Transportation of refueling gas is not permitted.

Small cylinders of non-flammable and non-toxic gas for the operation of mechanical prostheses.

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

The permit includes the necessary replacement cylinders, considering the flight's duration.

Non-spillable batteries with a maximum of 12 V and 100 Wh.

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

Each passenger can carry a maximum of two spare batteries;
To avoid short circuits, keep batteries separate from one another.

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

Fuel cells that power portable electronic devices such as cameras, cell phones, laptops, and video cameras.

Additional requirements:

Fuel cells must be removed and transported as hand baggage in the cabin.
Self‑balancing devices: NOT PERMITTED.

Personal necessities, articles and devices

It includes aerosols such as hairspray, perfumes, colognes, and medical supplies containing alcohol.

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

The total net quantity of all articles must not exceed 2 kg or 2 l, and the net amount of each single article must not exceed 0.5 kg or 0.5 l. These quantities are permitted. in the cabin if purchased after the Security Control at the airport;
The discharge valves on aerosols must include a protection cap or another suitable system to prevent the accidental release of contents.

Heat-producing articles or battery-powered equipment capable of producing extreme heat to the point of causing a fire when activated. Examples: flashlights and soldering irons.

Carry as hand baggage: ON APPROVAL.
Carry as hold baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Additional requirements:

Pack the heat-producing component of the battery separately to prevent activation during transportation;
Protect all detached batteries against short circuits.

Containing more than 70% alcohol by volume

Carry as hand baggage: PROHIBITED.
Carry as hold baggage: PROHIBITED.

Only permitted. to transport as Smartwings Cargo.

Example: dry shipper, fully absorbed in porous material, only including non-hazardous contents.

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.

Transportation requires a duly accredited person to hold a detailed article declaration.

Strike anywhere matches, blue flame, cigar lighters, or lighters powered by lithium batteries.

Carry as hand baggage: NOT PERMITTED, but you may carry a box of matches or a small lighter that does not contain unabsorbed liquid fuel other than liquefied gas, except on flights to and from the USA, which prohibits carrying lighters.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED.

Carbon dioxide as solid form, used to package perishable goods or items considered dangerous.

Carry as hand baggage: ON APPROVAL.
Carry as hold baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Additional requirements:

It cannot exceed 2.5 kg per person, and the packaging or baggage must permit the release of carbon dioxide;
In the aircraft's hold baggage, it is mandatory to label "dry ice" or "solid carbon dioxide" to indicate the dry ice's net weight or use an identifier referring to a weight of 2.5 kg or less.

Security bags, safes, and money sacks, particularly those containing dangerous substances such as lithium batteries or pyrotechnic material.

Carry as hand baggage: NOT PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED.

Carry as hand baggage: PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

Materials causing a deviation of more than 2 degrees are NOT PERMITTED;
To check the eligibility of materials, place them on the floor and, using a compass approximately 2 m from the surface of the package, check for movement higher than 2 degrees.

Medical items

Carry as hand baggage: ON APPROVAL.
Carry as hold baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Only permitted as Smartwings Cargo.

Pacemakers, Radioisotope cardiac markers or other devices, including lithium battery-operated devices.

Carry as hand baggage: NOT PERMITTED, except when implanted or equipped externally on the passenger.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED, except when implanted or equipped externally on the passenger.

Carry as hand baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Additional requirements:

The transportation of thermometers or barometers containing mercury is permitted, when being carried by a representative of a government meteorological office or similar authorized agency;
Pack these items in sturdy external packaging with a sealed liner or leak-proof bag and mercury-resistant material.

Carry as hand baggage: NOT PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: PERMITTED.

Additional requirements:

It is permitted to carry one medical or clinical thermometer per person for personal use;
Always transport the thermometer in its protective box.

Weapons, Ammunition and Explosives

Electroshock weapons that contain explosives, compressed gases, or lithium batteries (e.g. tasers):

Carry as hand baggage: NOT PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED.

These include pyrotechnics and other items containing explosives. (fireworks, flares, rockets).

Carry as hand baggage: NOT PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED.

Containing irritating or disabling substances (e.g. pepper spray or tear gas).

Carry as hand baggage: NOT PERMITTED.
Carry as hold baggage: NOT PERMITTED.

Carry as hold baggage: ON APPROVAL.

Additional requirements:

Safe packaging is a requirement for transportation;
You are only authorized to transport ammunition for personal use and complying with Division 1.4 S standard (UN 0012 or UN 0014 only) in quantities not exceeding 5 kg gross weight per person;
Combining allowances for more than one passenger in a single or multiple packages is not supported.

Complete List of Prohibited Articles

Pistols, firearms, and other devices that can or appear to be capable of causing serious injury by firing a projectile, including:

Firearms of any type, such as pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns;
Toy weapons, replicas, or firearms imitations that resemble real weapons;
Firearm components, excluding telescopic sights;
Air and CO2 pressure weapons, such as pistols, pellet guns, shotguns, and slingshots;
Signal pistols and alarm pistols;
Crossbows, bows, and arrows;
Spearfishing weapons;
Slings and slingshots.

Neutralizing devices: devices specifically designed to stun or immobilize, including:

Electroshock devices, such as stun guns, dart guns, tasers, and electric batons;
Devices for stunning and slaughtering animals;
Neutralizing or incapacitating chemicals, gases, and aerosols, such as mace, pepper spray, tear gas, acid gas, and animal-repellent aerosols.
Sharp or cutting objects: objects that can cause severe injuries due to their sharp point or edges, including:
Cutting instruments, such as axes, hatchets, and cleavers;
Ice axes and ice picks;
Razor blades;
X-acto knives;
Knives with blades longer than 6 cm;
Scissors with blades longer than 6 cm measured from the axis;
Sharp or cutting martial arts equipment;
Swords and sabers.

Work tools: tools that can cause severe injury or threaten the safety of the aircraft, including:

Crowbars;
Drills and drill bits, including cordless portable electric drills;
Tools with blades or shafts longer than 6 cm, such as screwdrivers and chisels;
Saws, including cordless portable electric saws;
Blowtorches;
Dowel guns and nail guns.

Blunt instruments: objects that can cause severe injury if used in a physical assault, including:

Baseball and softball bats;
Clubs and batons, such as nun chucks, billy clubs, and truncheons;
Blunt martial arts equipment.

Explosives, incendiary substances, and devices: explosive and incendiary materials and devices that can cause severe injury or threaten the safety of the aircraft, including:

Ammunition;
Explosive cartridges;
Detonators and fuses;
Replicas or imitations of explosive devices;
Mines, grenades, and other military explosives;
Fireworks and other pyrotechnic articles;
Smoke generators;
Dynamite, gunpowder, and plastic explosives.

Explosives, incendiary substances, and devices that can cause severe injury or threaten the safety of the aircraft, including:

Ammunition;
Explosive cartridges;
Detonators and fuses;
Mines, grenades, and other military explosives;
Fireworks and other pyrotechnic articles;
Smoke generators;

Dynamite, gunpowder, and plastic explosives.

Question 2

What baggage should be pre-ordered?

Answer

Baggage over 23 kg (Economy Class), oversize baggage (length of one side over 150 cm, sum of three sides over 250 cm), sports equipments, guns, living animals. The carriage of overweight baggage may be purchased on booking the ticket online or in My bookings.

The carriage of other items has to be purchased via Contact Form.

If your flight is a part of holiday package from a travel agency, please contact the agency to purchase these services. Price list of your tour operator will be applied. There may also be different checked baggage allowance applied on you.

The carriage of the above-mentioned items has to be purchased at least 24 hours (for overweight) or 48 hours (other items) before departure and may be denied for capacity reasons.

Question 3

What items are considered sport equipments?

Answer

The carriage of sport equipment should be purchased (except for sun umbrellas, beach tents and kids' surfboards) via Contact Form at least two days before departure and rarely may be denied for capacity reasons. The price for the service is as per the applicable price list. If your flight is a part of a holiday package, the carriage of sport equipment should be purchased at your tour operator, subject to the tour operator's price list.

Sport equipment shall mean some of the following items:

bicycle, scooter
ski equipment, i.e. 1 pair of skies including sticks or 1 snowboard and ski boots or 1 skibob
diving equipment - equipment necessary for diving such as pressure cylinder with accessory, one pair of fins, mask, diving suit, bathometer, etc. The equipment for snorkelling, i.e. 1 glasses, snorkel, 1 pair of fins shall not be considered the diving equipment
windsurfing equipment, i.e. 1 board with 1 sail and 1 mast
kiteboard + kite
paddleboard
surfboard
golf bag
parachute, paraglider, hang glider
fishing rod.

Sport equipment shall also mean sun umbrellas, beach tents and kids' surfboards. The price for the service is as per the applicable price list.

Question 4

Can I fly with my pet?

Answer

We carry cats and dogs. The carriage must be purchased by phone at least 48 hours before departure.

The price for the service is as per the applicable price list.

Each animal must have its own breathable crate with a firm bottom in which it can stand and rotate. The maximum size of crate acceptable to passenger cabin is 43x30x27 cm.

We may refuse to transport animals for operational or capacity reasons. Transport cannot be provided on flights operated by another carrier.

On flights to Dubai, animals can only be carried if checked in as cargo. An exception applies to certified guide dogs for visually impaired passengers who meet the prescribed conditions. On flights from Dubai, the carriage of animals is permitted under the carrier's standard conditions.

Animals cannot be carried on flights to/from Ras Al Khaimah and Marsa Alam.

On flights requiring mandatory disinfection of the passenger cabin, restrictions apply to the transport of cats. Cats may only travel in the cargo hold on these flights. This rule applies in particular to flights departing from Funchal (Madeira), Mombasa or the Cape Verde Islands.

We may be forced to deny the carriage for capacity or operational reasons.

If your flight is part of a holiday with a travel agency, please book the carriage of your animal directly through the travel agency.

Is it possible to transport goods without passengers?

Yes, in that case, please contact our cargo transport partner.

Question 6

How to transport artworks or musical instruments?

Answer

Expensive artworks or musical instruments have to be transported in the passenger cabin on an extra seat that can be purchased by phone. The price of extra seat equals to the price of the ticket for a person without the airport taxes. The maximum permissible dimensions of the transported item are 42x41x120 cm. We are not responsible for any damages.

If your flight is part of a tour with a travel agency, book an extra seat at your travel agency. The price is subject to its price list.

Musical instruments can also be accepted as a standard cabin baggage, should the dimensions of the instrument incl. the case not exceed the dimensions 90x35x20 cm and weight 8 kg.

Can I carry gas cylinders?

Answer

Travel gas cylinders can only be transported when emptied of any residual gas. Also diving oxygen bombs can be carried only empty and with deactivated underwater discharge lamps.

Can I carry fragile items?

Answer

Yes, but we are not liable for possible damages.

Expensive artworks or musical instruments have to be transported in the passenger cabin on an extra seat that can be purchased by phone. The price of extra seat equals the price of the ticket for a person without the airport taxes. The maximum permissible dimensions of the transported item are 42x41x120 cm. We are not responsible for any damages.
